The three basics - hunger,
sex and aggression. We deny the first, hide the second and glorify the third.
With millions starving, we overstock our granaries, allowing thousands of
tons of food to rot. We dump tons of food into the sea for fear that if it
were released into the market, the prices may come down. And all the time,
the images of pot-bellied, starving children emaciated, stick-figure adults
lie uneasily on our minds.
And our attitudes towards sex and aggression are just as skewed. A case in point - movies. While we consider pornography obscene, we condone carnography. As a leading film critic puts it, "Carnography does to violence what pornography does to sex."
We need to think. To rethink. For a moment, we need to cast off our societally-imposed mantles and think in free space. Of ourselves, our attitudes and beliefs, and where they come from. Our perceptions will be significantly altered if we dare to think. But again, Old Ugly rears its head again: Dare we?
Cheers.
