The Peter Principle Comment on "The Peter Principle"
© 2002 Navin Sigamany

According to the Peter Principle, a person rises to his or her level of incompetency. When someone does exceedingly well at a particular position, they are elevated to a higher rung on the hierarchy, often without a real look at whether such an elevation will suit that person, or whether that person will suit the position. If the person performs well even in that position, the elevation process is continued till, at one stage, the person stops performing. This non-performance is indicative not of the inability of the person but rather the unsuitability of the person to the position. Thus, the Peter Principle postulates, a person keeps rising till he or she reaches incompetency.

It is rather like telling Sachin, "Enough of your playing cricket. Now go and help India win the hockey world cup."

Congratulations to Dr. Kalam on becoming the president of India. And hoping that for once, the Peter Principle will be proved wrong.
