In the olden days, the sky was very near. One could reach up and touch it if one wanted.

One day, an old lady was stretching herself to ease her back. As she did this, she banged her head against the sky. She was so annoyed with the sky that she took a broom and gave it a thrashing. This sent the sky far overhead where it has stayed ever since.
