How Men came to have Fire
Go to Zine5 Interactive

The Moklum are a Northeast Indian people.

Rang, the Creator, gave fire to the monkey, who felt very proud. The monkey climbed a tree and began to shout out to all that he had things the others did not have. He beat a drum and blew a trumpet, and very soon, a lot of men had come to see what the noise was all about. When they saw the bright and shining thing in the monkey's hand, they wanted it. They tried to get it by throwing stones on the monkey. But the monkey climbed to the higher branches of the tree, till he reached the top.

The men, being more clever than monkeys, went and got a nest of red ants. This they placed near the tree, and soon the ants were all over the tree. They climbed on the monkey and bit him. Soon, he was jumping all over the tree, swatting the ants with his hands. While doing this, he dropped the fire, which the men took and since then, men have had fire.
