It was around 3 PM on November 14th - Children's Day. The place was our college auditorium. We (my classmates and I) were in the final year of our undergraduate course and were watching a variety entertainment programme performed by children in the age group of 5 - 12 years. It was really good and we were enjoying it very much when we suddenly came to know that these children were from a home for destitute people. All my enjoyment turned to sympathy and sadness upon hearing this. My heart sunk when I thought that these children's parents were no more. They had no blood relative to whom they could relate the day's events once they got back home - Oh! A home without parents? My heart bled for those kids.
I was reminded of the unfortunate people of all ages, and remembered, with utmost reverence, Mother Theresa who dedicated her whole life to improve the lives of others. What a great soul! So selfless and so noble!
I thought of all those hapless children who resort to begging in the streets because of the only fault that they were born of, not only poor but also irresponsible parents. Perhaps some of them aspire to study, work and raise their standard of living. "How about doing my best to give them an opportunity? Definitely not a bad idea," I thought.
Suddenly, my life seemed to take on a new meaning and became purposeful when I thought about our fellow beings with a good amount of care, love and affection. After all, we are all siblings and the Lord Almighty is our Father! Perhaps he wanted us to help each other and that is the reason why he did not create all men equal. I decided that I would do my part to improve their lives - support a child's education, educate people belonging to the illiterate masses and physically and financially play an active role for their welfare.
In the Book of Genesis, Cain may have asked the Lord "Am I my brother's keeper?" But if all of us unite and do something good for them we can really achieve the ideal condition that Michael Jackson says in his popular song - "Heal the World Make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race."
