Ex-CM and freshly minted 'victim' Dr. K. Karunanidhi has not been to the Tamil Nadu Assembly since his electoral defeat in May 2001. Dr. KK is an elected MLA who refuses to discharge his duty to his constituency while Madam JJ who is yet to be elected (she cannot stand for elections as she is a convicted felon) rules Tamil Nadu unleashing her fury as she pleases. Her accomplishments thus far:
The midnight arrest of Karunanidhi; beating up Union Ministers Maran and Baalu and throwing them in jail.
Donating an elephant to the Guruvayoor temple in Kerala. The astrologer she consults advised her to do so on winning the elections.
Putting a gag order on her sycophantic and cowardly ministers. JJ does not trust her ministry to speak responsibly and we the people of Tamil Nadu are supposed to trust them to make decisions for us.
Changing the spelling of her name yet again. It is now Jayalalithaa. Again the astrologer or perhaps the numerologist.
Ensuring that the DMK rally protesting the arrest of Dr. KK was bloody. Five people died, party workers were lathi-charged as were several journalists. Journalists who took refuge in the DGP's office were also roughed up, their cameras smashed. The police claimed they could not identify the journalists in the melee. Comforting to know that the keepers of the law have poor observation skills. FYI, press persons have cameras, notepads, video cameras, microphones and a Press pass, which they usually display prominently.
Refusing to transfer the three police officials involved in the Dr. KK victimisation programme to Delhi. The Centre is still valiantly trying to make her toe the line. But I think the bookies would favour Madam. I don't think the Prime Minister for all his steel-reinforced knees stands much of a chance.
The NDA is flummoxed by Madam's arrant disregard of them. They need to pay attention to the DMK's constant whining but unlike JJ they cannot be highhanded. When will we be delivered of the shenanigans of Tamil Nadu's high priestess? Maybe when she sings, 'cause the show ain't over till the fat lady sings.
