Middling Comment on Suchitra's "Middling"
© 2002 Suchitra Kumar

I saw a dog obsessed
With the scent of evil
Put his head
In a cardboard box
And rage to find the source.
Good and bad were simple
In childhood;
Knowing black from white,
Which shoe on which foot.
But thoughts and people teach
And unlearn my lessons;
Sandpaper my edges
To a smoothness
That sits on a fence.
