The Man of Burdens by James D. Ardis

James D. ArdisHis frown tells stories
Of a man no history student
Will ever be bothered to memorize…

Calluses line fingers
Crippled into place
From the work life’s
Led him to.

His frown tells stories
Of a man no history student
Will ever be bothered to memorize
Just a man living his life
For anyone who cares.

But dear student don’t forget him
Pity him and know him
For he is the common man
Acknowledge him and love him
For he is a man of burdens.

Living a life as vain
As teardrops on a fire.

My gosh, James, just when I think you cannot possibly write anything more beautiful or profound, you go and do it. This poem is so filled with meaning, so evocative, and so brilliantly worded. The opening verse alone speaks tomes.

If you haven’t already had a collection published, you certainly need to consider compiling your poems into a book. I think some publisher would jump at the opportunity to represent you. I know I would. :-)

Killer. I could put every line into quotes and remark on it, but I’ll just do my favorite – the one that socked me in the stomach – “…As teardrops on a fire”. You’ve got an amazing voice. Also, you’re able to say so much with so few words – that’s something that’s very difficult to do. How do you do it? Amazing. Thanks again!
